Six Rivers Update: Parent Involvement and Student Leadership

Six Rivers Pirates:

With a few weeks under our belt, I must applaud the effort of teachers and students alike who have done their very best to make the most of distance learning.  In the meantime, we are continuing to streamline the delivery of curriculum and assist students who need support.   I anticipate that tweaks and revisions will continue as we attempt to find out what is most effective. To this end, parent meetings to facilitate input and support as well as student leadership meetings will take place in the next two weeks.

First, a meeting of the Parent Advisory Committee next week will gather input, discuss student progress, and review current plans.  The Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) will be meeting on Thursday, September 17th at 5:30.  Ths meeting is open to the entire Six Rivers Community. Frankly, input from parents is more important now than ever. I want to focus on the practical aspects of our three goals: providing an effective engaging curriculum, fostering a supportive safe community, and building the systems to support these goals.

Information regarding future meetings can be viewed in the Six Rivers calendar and on the school webpage. The PAC consists of parent representatives from each class. Fortunately, three members are returning to  PAC from last year's team and at least one parent from the freshman class has indicated their interest.  I will be utilizing Google Meetings as it allows me to send the meeting invitation directly to each parent in google calendar/email. If you wish to listen in and or contribute, please consider taking part in the meeting.

This Wednesday during lunch Six Rivers student leadership, the Pirate Council, will meet during lunch. Student leaders should watch an email invitation arriving from Emma Scott for this virtual meeting.  Student voice and leadership are important elements at Six Rivers. The enthusiasm of the students who have stepped forward thus far is encouraging.

Pirate Parents is a group of parents looking for ways to assist students and teachers or to orchestrate or enhance Six River's activities. The first Pirate Parents meeting will take place on Wednesday, September 23rd, at 5:30. The meetings are no longer than an hour. Following the meeting, I will share the projects and priorities determined at the meeting with the entire Six Rivers Community. The meeting link is meet.google.com/dvt-daso-dfy.

The school board is seeking a student representative from Six Rivers' junior or senior classes to take part in NHUHSD Board Meetings. If you are interested, please take a look at the attached application. The board meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 6 pm.  See me for more information.

Communication is especially important given the challenges of distance learning. I would like to remind you all that each day the Six Rivers daily bulletin is published on the news portion on the front page of our website for teachers to share and for the community to review.

Please watch for additional emails containing additional updates this week.

I wish you the very best. Please do your best to remain healthy and well.

It is good to be a Pirate.
