Clover Schinke
My name is Clover Schinke and I am excited for my 2nd year as the History teacher at SRCHS. A little about me: I am from Los Angeles, attended college in Boston, graduate school (law) in San Francisco and then lived in New York City. In 2003, I moved to Humboldt County to get my teaching credential and to complete a Master's Degree in Social Studies. Since then, I have taught History in Humboldt's middle and high schools with the exception of 2020-2022 when I served as a Humboldt County Deputy District Attorney.
I am a huge fan of project-based learning. I have found students are most engaged when they are given choices and the freedom to question, explore and create. A key part of my curriculum each year involves a history project called History Day. Following a different annual theme, students pick a topic, do extensive research, find primary sources and eventually construct an amazing project in their choice of form: website, performance, paper, documentary, podcast or exhibit.
Sophomores (World History) - How To Build a Government? Highlights will include a government building simulation, discussions of current events, Global Revolutions webquest, Study of World Religions & Islam, TCI digital textbook, Creation and presentation of an Industrial Revolution Inventions website, Document Based Questions on Imperialism, Study of China, India, Central America.
Juniors (United States History) - What is the American Dream? (and how does it change over time?) Highlights will include “What is My American Dream?” project/reflection, discussion of current events, TCI digital textbook, Constitution Study, Creation and Presentation of a Bill of Rights and Important Amendments website, Civil War Narratives, Progressive Era Document Based Questions.
Seniors (Government) - What makes a Government “Good”? Highlights will include a Create Your Own Utopia Project, discussion of current events, Historical Debates, TCI digital textbook, Creation and presentation of a Landmark Supreme Court case website, and a unit on the Judicial system culminating in a mock trial and panel discussions with prosecutors, defense attorneys and judges.
Seniors (Senior Project) - Time to Launch! Highlights will include creation and implementation of a freshman/senior mentoring program, extensive college and career guidance, participation in the annual Canned Food Drive and Winter Performance, a larger scale student-chosen community service project, planning and fundraising for the senior trip in June, “adulting” topics, and stress reduction techniques.
